Hello East Valley and Southern Regions,
One of APPL’s goals for the 2027 season is to strengthen and grow participation in the Women’s, Men’s, and Mixed 4.5 and 5.0+ divisions.
To support this goal, APPL is introducing 4-player Quad divisions in the East Valley and Southern Regions for designated 4.5 and 5.0+ divisions during the 2027 season. This one- to two-year pilot program is designed to build sustainable participation and create a pathway for long-term growth at the highest skill levels across all age divisions.
APPL remains committed to the 6-player team format as the foundation of our league and will continue offering the 6-player format in the West Valley Region.
The Quad format is intended as a temporary strategy to encourage participation and provide opportunities for players in divisions where the number of eligible players is currently limited. Our goal is to use this pilot period to build participation and ultimately support sustainable 6-player teams at these higher skill levels.
Following is a chart outlining the team roster requirements for players at the required skill level and allowable exceptions, which was previously communicated earlier this year.
Men’s, Women’s & Mixed 4.5 & 5.0 Quad Format Divisions
4.5 & 5.0 Quad Divisions | Minimum # Players at Required Skill Level | Exceptions* | Required # of players by 11/8/26 |
Women’s & Men’s: Open & 50+ 4.5 & 5.0+ | 4 Players | 4 players within 0.5 of the skill required | 6 Players |
Women’s & Men’s 65+ 4.5 & 5.0 | 4 Players | Unlimited players within 0.5 of the skill required | 6 Players |
Open & 50+ Mixed 4.5 & 5.0 | 4 Players | 5 players within 0.5 of the skill required | 6 Players |
*Self-rated and appealed players will not be able to play as an exception
How the Quad Format Works
A Quad team consists of four players of the same gender. Teams compete against other teams in their same gender, skill level, and age division, just as they would in a traditional APPL division.
Match Format
Each match consists of six games
With four players on each team, the players are paired to create two doubles teams. They stay together for the match.
Quad Team Match Format
Round 1
- Home Team 1 vs. Away Team 1
- Home Team 2 vs. Away Team 2
Each matchup consists of 3 games played to 11 points, win by 2.
Round 2
- Home Team 1 vs. Away Team 2
- Home Team 2 vs. Away Team 1
Each matchup consists of 3 games played to 11 points, win by 2.
Game and Rest Periods
The following procedures apply to all games in both rounds:
- Teams will switch ends after each game.
- During the third game of each matchup, teams will switch ends when one team reaches 6 points.
- There will be a 2-minute rest period between games.
- There will be a 5-minute rest period between Round 1 and Round 2.
The rest periods are the same as those used in APPL’s 6-player format, allowing matches to conclude within approximately 2 hours.
Match Format Summary
Each team match consists of:
- 2 rounds
- 2 matchups per round
- 3 games per matchup
- 6 total games
This provides the same total number of games as APPL’s standard 6-player team format.
